I’m back with my new column 15 seconds of fame, the traditional 15 minutes having been reduced by some Instagram magic! Every month, I’ll feature one talented anonymous bird from this social media, allowing you to discover that person thanks to a little quiz and my favorite video (and as I’ve always had issues sorting things out, I’ll even add two extra links). But please note that even if I’m offering 15 seconds of fame to these music-loving users, it’s actually YEARS of success that I wish and presage with this column! Without further ado, I’ll invite you to get to know Reuben Ofoia. While I definitely wish he could serenade me every night (and this must have something to do with the fact that I chose his rendition of one of my favorite love songs as THE demo), for once, I’ve not only been struck by a talent: I absolutely love the way he presents himself on his page. Cause Reuben always makes sure to pour out his soul in his covers, but also his heart in his captions, openly talking about his feelings, values and vision of love. This is quite refreshing and this passion also came through his answers to my quiz, which for the very first time made me regret I couldn’t actually meet and chat with the artist I want to highlight in this feature.

And if you think you have what it takes to give me goosebumps too, send me your link to alison@urbansoul.be or @urbansoulmag on Twitter (and by the way, let’s follow each other on Instagram as well, shall we?)

____

Artist name: Reuben Ofoia
Age: 21
City: Happy Valley (but for real: the US)
I’m a: singer and beatboxer.
Instruments: I play the guitar, ukulele, and the piano. Currently working on the harmonica.
I fell in love with music… : Well, I’ve always loved music since I was a kid but I couldn’t tell you how my love for singing/playing instruments and being physically/mentally intertwined with music began or happened quite frankly. Quite honestly, I probably first fell in love with music when I first heard the group Earth, Wind and Fire or the famous Stevie Wonder. I truly fell in love with music when my first and only ever girlfriend broke my heart. There was something about the pain and anger that I felt that day that physically hurting/abusing something or some kind of object wouldn’t fix all of which occurred when coincidentally I heard the song Treat Me Like Somebody by Tink. When I attempted to sing this song, it relieved so much pain and agony from my heart and it felt so liberating. It was such an amazing feeling. A feeling I know I won’t ever forget but this would probably have to be the most pivotal moment in my life of when and how I went from liking music to loving music. A bit cliché but heartache can truly change a man’s perspective on things and can greatly impact an individuals approach to Love in general.
I sing because… : it makes me happy. It allows me an escape from the stresses and the burdens that life throws my way, but also allows me to do the opposite. It allows me to show how thankful I am. It allows me to relieve what’s on my mind in a positive manner. It allows me to spiritually connect with the big man upstairs as well as allows me to connect with people any and everywhere in a different unique way. It allows me to express my perspectives and myself on certain topics, like Love for example! Most of all, singing allows me to do what I truly believe God brought me into this beautiful world to do and that is to make others happy. Affect the lives of others in a very positive manner by making them smile, laugh or cry because music allows us to do so. We can connect with other individuals in so many different ways but music for me is the best way. Music allows us to relate with one another like nothing I’ve ever seen. Music/singing is an amazingly beautiful experience and to not share my passion or my thoughts of such would be selfish of me!
My musical pet peeve: It would probably have to be bad lyrics. Bad lyrics meaning lyrics that only degrade people or certain individuals. Lyrics that don’t have any particular purpose or positive message, especially lyrics that speak about drugs as if they’re a good thing.
The song that represents me the best: I probably have to say Chivalry is Dead by Trevor Wesley or Let’s Just Be by the amazing Miguel. At least that’s what I think, we’d actually have to meet if you want a good sense of  who I am as an individual. That way we (we meaning anyone and everyone I speak to) can see what songs or types of genres best describe me in a nutshell.
3 words to describe my own music: I won’t give that because I don’t have any for myself. When people hear me sing, I want them to have their own interpretation of how I sound or opinions of what kind of music I like or sing. I want you the people (fans/supporters/non-supporters) to describe what you hear when you hear me. If I tell you what I think or how I would describe my sound, you’ll go in with a set expectation or standard of what I should sound like. The only thing that I could probably say about my voice is, it’s different. Other then that, I would love to hear what your 3 words for me would be.
Dream collaboration: Currently, it would be a dream come true if I could collaborate with Tori Kelly because her lyrics and her music are great. Well, that and she is very beautiful!
Upcoming projects: None so far, just enjoying music on a daily basis and sharing it (via IG) with the world as if all of you were right in front of me.
Where to find me:  You can find me on Facebook. Just type my name in, Reuben Ofoia, and you should be able to find me. If you want some insight on my everyday life, follow me on Snapchat @reuofoia! I can only hope that all of you enjoy!
