Soundcloud‘s Related tracks blessed my ears once again back in February, leading me to Julius‘ profile thanks to his tender Mona Lisa lullaby. I obviously whipped into a musical frenzy right away, listening to all his other offerings.

My only frustration was the lack of information about the singer. So when he followed me back on Instagram a few weeks ago, I jumped at the chance to ask him a bunch of questions and get familiar. “I first fell in love with music during one of my mom’s church choir rehearsals – I was just a little kid falling asleep in a church pew to the sound of my mom playing piano and a choir singing…”, he told Urban Soul. Influenced by his parents’ musical taste, Julius learned his craft with the best teachers you can get: Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers. Like many of us, he just liked to sing at the top of his lungs in the shower, including along some N*Sync, Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees karaoke CDs. But luckily for him, he was actually better at it than most of us. And a year ago, he even got confident enough to bring his gift outside of the bathroom, uploading on Soundcloud a captivating iPhone voice memo “dedicated to all the fathers and father figures”.

It didn’t take long for a proper song to appear. Crooning his disappointment in a love interest got Julius more fans than ever – that track currently gathers over 450K streams! It also marks the beginning of a bunch of collaborations with 4e, a production duo who also worked with blackbear and Bibi Bourelly.

In April, Julius embarked on tour with Gnash, performing for the very first time in a venue. “Opening up for my boy Gnash on tour was a blessing. I’ve never really performed in front of people so every city we stopped at was a learning experience, he recalled for Urban Soul. I’m really grateful for that opportunity, it was a good time.” Around the same time, he announced his Turquoise debut EP on Twitter, which we have yet to hear to this day. When quizzed about it, the artist remained silent but it’s probably just because he knows that the music will do the talking sooner than we think… Keeping in mind that he recorded with the $12K mic that Beyoncé used for Lemonade this summer, you can definitely only expect big things for his career!

In the meantime, he unveiled two weeks ago Golden Hour, his first video, directed by Christian Long. And just like this magical moment before sunset, it is solar, soft, beautifully simple and it feels like Julius is just whispering in your ear. The fact that this only reached 174 views so far is beyond me but to be honest, I quite enjoy the feeling to be in on one of the greatest secrets of the industry. And while I take secrets very seriously, don’t take this one to the grave!
