Some of you might already know her “Badman Lisa” persona on social media… This definitely wasn’t my case but I’m happy that my first introduction to the fiery and confident Anisa is through music. The British Somali independent artist has recently released her second single Deserve Me and that playful nod to the ’90s and early ’00s r&b music won me over from the get go.
I’ve been finding a lot of comfort in all these nostalgic throwback tunes that have come out this year (this reminds me that I have still to share with you guys my love letter to FLO) and Anisa executes that formula perfectly with the help of her producer Edashman. From the empowering lyrics to the sassy yet sexy vocal delivery and not to forget that Latin twist on the second verse and the interpolation of JLo‘s Love Don’t Cost A Thing, the song almost feels too short but it’s only one more valid reason to press play all over again. “The moment I heard the production, it felt super nostalgic to me, and I really miss that old school sound. The inspiration for the song came from that ‘90s and early 2000s R&B era, which was very pivotal to me growing up, and has such a great influence on my music today! This song is about finally realising that you deserve better – it’s almost like waking up from an epiphany and finally letting go! It’s a song I created to teach girls to never settle for anything less than what you deserve, and that’s on SELF RESPECT”, Anisa explains.
Deserve Me is not the last time you’ll hear from her in 2022 as Anisa is planning for not one but two more single releases before the end of the year.
